An ancient Chinese character meaning 'bright' that internet users discovered looks exactly like a distressed face: the box is a face, the lines inside are eyes and a furrowed brow, the 八 at the top is raised eyebrows. Around 2005-2008, 囧 became China's original emoji — the universal expression for awkward, embarrassing, or absurd situations. It predated modern emojis and showed how text characters could be repurposed emotionally.

A phonetic pun on 和谐 (héxié, 'harmonious') — the official government term for a stable, censorship-friendly society. When content was deleted, it was 'harmonized' (被和谐了). The river crab (河蟹) sounds identical to 和谐 and became the symbol of censorship — a crab that sideways-walks through the internet snipping content. Saying 'the river crab got it' meant 'it was censored.'

Originally 'mountain stronghold' (referring to outlaw camps in Chinese history), 山寨 came to mean copycat products, knockoffs, and bootlegs. The Shanzhai phone industry of the mid-2000s produced cheap copies of Nokia and Motorola phones with surprising quality, creating an entire economic ecosystem. 山寨 evolved from pure pejorative to complex term — sometimes meaning cheap fake, sometimes meaning creative reimagination.

Literally 'going to buy soy sauce.' In a 2008 TV interview about a controversial entertainment scandal, a man on the street responded to the reporter: 'I'm just here to buy soy sauce — none of my business.' The clip went massively viral as the perfect deflection. Now used whenever you want to signal total non-involvement: I'm just passing through, don't involve me, I have groceries to buy.

In 2009, a mysterious post appeared on a World of Warcraft forum with just one line: 'Jia Junpeng, your mom is calling you home for dinner.' Nobody knew who Jia Junpeng was — but millions upvoted it anyway. It became a viral sensation representing collective nostalgia, internet absurdism, and the universal childhood experience of being dragged away from your game. By 2015 it had cemented itself as a cultural touchstone invoked whenever someone wants to signal shared generational memory or gently mock someone for being lost in the online world.
