Kuaishou
"Where everyday China creates — the working-class meme frontier"
About Kuaishou
Kuaishou is Douyin's main rival in short video, but with a fundamentally different character. Where Douyin skews urban, polished, and aspirational, Kuaishou is the platform of rural China, small-town entrepreneurship, and unfiltered everyday life.
Why It Matters for Meme Culture
Kuaishou represents a China that Douyin and Xiaohongshu don't — the 下沉市场 (sinking market, i.e., non-tier-1-city users) that constitutes the majority of China's population. Its meme culture is rawer, more direct, and often more genuinely funny precisely because it's not trying to be curated. Kuaishou spawned memes about rural entrepreneurship, manual labor pride, and the absurdities of livestream commerce — where hosts shout into cameras to sell products at 2am. The platform's comment section culture is notably less filtered than anywhere else online in China.
