It's part sardonic self-awareness, part social critique: women acknowledging that many of their girl-group bonds are performative rituals rather than genuine connection.

As Chinese millennials and Gen-Z navigated intensely competitive social environments — elite school cliques, cutthroat workplaces, and curated social media personas — a gap emerged between the performative sisterhood displayed online and actual emotional intimacy. The term spread through Weibo and Bilibili partly as ironic self-labeling, letting women laugh at the superficiality of modern social bonds rather than feel hurt by them.
