August 8, 2016. Rio Olympics. Fu Yuanhui had just swum the 100m backstroke semi-final. A CCTV reporter caught her before she knew her time — she was told she'd broken the national record mid-interview. Her reaction was immediate and completely genuine: shock, joy, exaggerated exhaustion all at once. The clip was shared 18 million times on Weibo by morning.
Cultural Context
Fu Yuanhui was remarkable precisely because she was unguarded — the opposite of the composed, modest athlete Chinese audiences expected. She complained about her period on live TV.
